             This globally famous silicon city needs just a thunderstorm shower to bare. People hit by sweltering heat prayed for small mercy and the rain gods obliged. Now the same people pray for no more rains. Courtesy, Bangalore Mahanaqara Palike. 

             Much proclaimed tomtomed work of desilting of drains has fallen upsidedown. The roads were flooded, traffic blocked for hours, power shutdown, the shoddy work of BMP lay exposed. The frequently parroted explanation that only low laying areas gets flooded proved false as, Malleswaram, Sadhashivanagar and Vyalikaval were worst hit. Added to the woes were nearly 300 uprooted trees , posing grave threat to the passers by. The people living in low lying areas like Okalipuram, Shriramapuram, suffered heavy losses, as the rain water entered their houses, washing away provisions and utensils. 

             The planting of trees across the roads lacks planning. Forest department does not prune the trees, whenever required, the trees are chopped on one side and allowed to branch on the side of the road, which makes them to lean on roads. Further BSNL, BWSSB, BESCOM dig into their roots. Old trees need to be removed replacing with stout bushy trees. 

             The desilting work should be planned properly ahead of monsoon, which has to be supervised by the officials of BMP. The contractors who do not adhere to the specified norms should be black listed .

             Co-ordination among BMP, BWSSB, BESCOM and forest department is an absolute necessity. The unexpected rains have exposed, how unprepared the city is for monsoon. The nature has sent warning signals. It is for BMP and forest department to tighten grip on squads, workers contractors and . take precautionary measures.
